TAKE CONTROL OF YOUR ENERGY – A PUBLIC MEETING

This Thursday evening (19th March) from 6pm – 9pm, a public meeting on energy and smart meters is taking place at Judgemeadow Community College, Marydene Drive, Leicester, LE5 6HP.

Rt Hon Keith Vaz MP, Smart Energy GB, Citizens Advice, Leicester City Council and the Energy Saving Trust will answer your questions about how smart meters can help you get your gas and electricity under control.

For some background, smart meters will replace the analogue meters we currently have in our homes. They will provide consumers with accurate bills, near real time information on energy usage in pounds and pence, and greater control over their gas and electricity. The Leicester area is at the forefront of the roll out, receiving the technology before much of the country.

SMART ENERGY WEEK

Smart Energy GB, the national consumer campaign for smart meters, is bringing Smart Energy Week to Leicester from Monday 16 to Sunday 22 March 2015.

Leicester is at the forefront of the national campaign for the roll-out of smart meters and this week is a chance for residents to find out more about how smart meters can transform the way we buy energy and help households in Leicester get gas and electricity under control.

Activities will include an energy advice evening in collaboration with Citizens Advice, the Energy Savings Trust, Leicester City Council & Smart Energy GB, plus an exciting smart energy game at Highcross shopping centre where celebrity Linda Barker will explain the transformation smart meters will make to how we live our lives (see full details below).

Smart meters are the new generation of gas and electricity meters being installed by energy suppliers in homes across Great Britain to replace old-fashioned meters. All households in Leicester will be offered a smart meter by 2020, and by the end of this year alone around 5,500 homes in Leicester will have had their new smart meters installed.

Launching Leicester Smart Energy Week, Linda Barker, celebrity home expert, said: ā€œAs an interior designer, Iā€™m always thinking about the visual aspects of the home. Yet something that canā€™t be seen is the energy that powers it, and because of this many of us have no idea how much gas and electricity we use.

ā€œSmart meters change all this. This clever new technology shows you exactly how much energy you’re using, how much it’s costing you and puts you in control of your gas and electricity, making it easier to manage the household budget.ā€

Sacha Deshmukh, Chief Executive of Smart Energy GB, said: ā€œAll 123,000 households in Leicester will be offered a smart meter by 2020, and by the end of this year alone around 5,500 homes in Leicester will have had their new smart meters installed. Smart meters will revolutionise the way we manage our gas and electricity and will finally mean an end to estimated bills. Smart Energy Week is here so we can start to bring the smart meter transformation to Leicester.ā€

Smart meters are new technology, which will transform how we buy gas and electricity. They will replace the analogue meters we currently have in our homes and microbusinesses, and will provide consumers with near real time information on energy usage in pounds and pence, accurate bills and control over their gas and electricity use. Over the next five years they will be offered to every household in Great Britain, at no extra cost.
