Steps and Smiles with Apnapan – Walking in Evington Park
My name is Aman, and I am a volunteer with Apnapan CIC. Being part of Apnapan has given me the opportunity to support my community in meaningful ways. Recently, I took the initiative to become a walk leader because I’ve seen how powerful simple activities like walking can be—not just for physical health, but for mental wellbeing and social connection. I wanted to create a space where women could come together, feel supported, and take small but positive steps towards a healthier lifestyle.
Indy and I had several meetings, and we are now working very closely with British Triathlon, who have funded our programme. We hope to continue working together on further projects in the future.
One of the programmes I now lead is Steps & Smiles, a diverse, women-only walking group based in Evington Park. The group was created to provide a safe and welcoming environment where women from different backgrounds can come together without hesitation or barriers.
A key focus of the group is ensuring that everyone feels welcome from the moment they join. Whether it’s someone attending for the first time or a regular participant, we make a conscious effort to create a warm, friendly atmosphere where conversations flow easily and no one feels left out.
The group is inclusive to all women, including those living with long-term health conditions such as cancer, depression, or arthritis. We understand that everyone has different abilities and comfort levels, so the walks are gentle, flexible, and supportive. It’s not about speed or distance—it’s about showing up, moving at your own pace, and feeling good.
What makes Steps & Smiles truly special is the sense of connection it builds. Women get the chance to meet new people, share experiences, and support one another. Along the way, we also take time to appreciate the beauty and local history of Evington Park, making each walk both enjoyable and enriching.
Most importantly, we have fun. There’s laughter, conversation, and a shared sense of purpose. It’s inspiring to see women come together, build confidence, and form friendships—all while simply walking side by side.
For me, leading this group has been incredibly rewarding. It’s a reminder that small initiatives can make a big difference, and that sometimes, the simplest steps can lead to the biggest smiles.
We have recently completed our first 6-week block programme, and it has been a real hit in Evington. I have noticed the ladies forming friendships, coming out of their shells, and becoming more active and confident. It has been incredibly rewarding to see such positive changes in such a short time.
We are pleased that the programme has been so popular that we are now running our Block 2 programme, continuing to build on this momentum and welcoming even more women to join us.
Indy, the founder of Apnapan, is grateful to Mita at Asian Sports Foundation for introducing her to Sarah and Cathy at British Triathlon, which has enabled the delivery of Steps & Smiles.
