Greener Gardens – plants in front gardens help reduce the impacts of global heating

168 properties flooded internally in Leicester this January. 109 were homes in areas of high deprivation.  Flooding is becoming more common as rain gets heavier due to climate change, and the increased paving of front gardens is making it worse.  It’s because so much rainwater runs off into our drains and rivers instead of being absorbed by the ground.

There are so many changes we can make in our front gardens to reduce the impacts of global heating.

Will you pledge to change something.

What to aim for in a greener front garden:

Hedges rather than fences

Gravel, earth or permeable paving

Vines climbing up walls or fences

Trees and shrubs

Tilted paving directing rain into absorbent catchment areas

Flowerbeds and pockets of nature
