Hello Evington neighbours, it’s Smita and Shreya from Nupur Arts!

Celebrating 35 Years of Nupur Arts

Dance-dhamaka took place on Saturday 5th April

In last Autumn’s issue of the Evington Echo magazine (October/November 2024) we told you about Nartan, the annual festival we curate showcasing professional South Asian Classical Dance. The festival was a great success, with dance enthusiasts and industry professionals coming from Leicester and other cities to watch the headline performance at Curve. Thanks for coming and also to  a bigger Show called Dance Dhamaka held in the Spring of 2024 at De Montfort Hall.

Each week, almost 200 children and adults took dance classes with the Nupur Arts Academy, learning a range of styles including Bharatanatyam and Bollywood. Dance Dhamaka is a vibrant and varied showcase of their work, complete with dazzling costumes and not one but two medley items

Before the show, three of our dance members answered these questions.

1. What are you most looking forward to about Dance Dhamaka this year ?

Baviya (mum and adult Bharatanatyam dancer): I’m really looking forward to Dance Dhamaka this year. I’m performing three dance items – one energetic, vibrant Marathi song (semi-classical), a lovely Hindi song and a devotional little Lord Ganesh vandana. The most special part is sharing the stage with both my children, for one of the items. The song selection is fantastic this year and I can’t wait to bring the energy and emotion of each performance to life.

Meghna (age 12): I am looking forward to performing in a massive hall and dancing some lovely choreographed classical songs.

Rahul (age 9): I look forward to dancing in front of a huge audience. Very excited.

2. How do you feel about performing on the stage at De Montfort Hall?

Baviya: It’s an iconic venue and the biggest stage I’ve seen in Leicester. We always dance in a big group here and we have a lot of space.

Meghna and Rahul: We are excited to perform at De Montfort Hall. We love the songs and we hope you will love them too.

3. Why do you think people should come and see the show?

Baviya, Meghna and Rahul: Dance Dhamaka is a celebration of culture, talent and pure joy. The stunning choreography; new, colourful, vibrant costumes; mix of Bollywood, folk, western and classical dances is a truly mesmerising experience to watch, and you wouldn’t want to miss it.
