The Gloves Are Off!

Not only is there a planning application for 900 new houses south of the A47 at Bushby, a flagged Strategic Development Area south of Gartree Road for a mixed-use new neighbourhood which spills over into Oadby, with around 4,000 homes, 3,150 within Harborough District and 850 within Oadby and Wigston, near to Stretton Hall, but now a formal planning application has been submitted to Harborough District Council for this development on farmland near Leicester Airport. Urban & Civic Homes England (part of the Wellcome Trust) have earmarked 931 acres (377 hectares) of land to the east of Oadby and north of Great Glen for the major scheme.

The proposed site straddles the boundary of Harborough District Council and Oadby and Wigston Borough Council and it is anticipated identical planning applications will be lodged with each authority in due course. Thus, this large development will spill over adjoining boundaries that will bring Harborough District and Oadby together and reduce green wedge and separation between settlements.

More importantly the flagging of another site for a further 4000 houses around Stoughton has already taken place. In a previous article we warned of the possibility of ‘creeping development’ but it seems the Governments New Homes Accelerator Programme is fuelling an all-out charge by developers that will deprive many, including Evington of the green wedge and separation that is so supportive of mental wellbeing to many.
