The Cedars-Update August 2026
Since the article in the Echo-on-line on 8th August informing readers that the Cedars had changed hands, nothing further seems to have happened. No one seems to know who the new owners are or when they will be taking charge. Staff and pub regulars seem none wiser which must be disconcerting for staff employed previously by King Henry’s Taverns. Local people, rightly, have some interest in knowing just what the future holds as the Cedars is the only pub ‘in town’ and is well patronised on both the pub and restaurant sides.
One can speculate that the sales contract is still being negotiated as it seems a rather poor approach to business to leave such uncertainty that may well make some people lose interest in the place.
What we do know is that the property was offered by Christie & Co as a freehold, asking £1.25 million, with approximately one acre of land. The listing is now marked “Under offer” rather than available for sale.
We know it’s EBITDA (Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation, and Amortization)[i] is £158,310 with a turnover £1.078m, it has a one-acre plot with large beer garden, Trade is Split into 52%-48% in favour of food and there are over 2000 houses within 1 km. Making it a marketable property
King Henry’s Taverns has sold The Cedars freehold, the buyer’s identity and intentions remain undisclosed and there is currently no evidence of a planning application by the new owner.
Leicester City Council’s own historic planning documentation describes the Cedars as “a public house of local architectural and historic interest” and records that its grounds contain Tree Preservation Order trees of significant amenity value.
One unknown is the cost of any upgrade needed as the Cedars still requires improvements, particularly to the outside and garden area.
From this we can conclude that the site has not been bought for redevelopment, but the precise nature of the intended future business remains unknown.
