Candle Winter Warning

Candle Winter Warning

It is so nice in winter months to get into a warm bath with a glass of wine, with music in the background, in candlelight. So relaxing. Halloween and Diwali are key times in the year when more candles are lit and as Christmas approaches, we break out the candles to provide that festive glow around the home.

Some people unfortunately, particularly many elderly use candles to reduce their electricity bills, especially in the darker nights that autumn and winter bring.

But recently the fire service has issued safety advice after a fire at a house in Lutterworth, caused by a candle that set a towel ablaze, resulted in severe damage to the property. Luckily no one was hurt. Advice offered to householders in order to use candles safely include, keeping the candles and tealights away from flammable items such as curtains, soft furnishings and bedding, not to group candles close together, to place them in suitable steady holders, keep them away from draughts, not to place them on plastic surfaces such as a television, not to move lit candles and to fully extinguish all lit candles and tealights before leaving the room or going to bed.

One possible solution is to use battery operated LED candles.
