Surgery Update January 2026

Anyone who has passed the old GP surgery at 10 The Common recently cannot have failed to notice that Leicester Builders are hard at work stripping out the old fixtures and are now in the process of refitting the building.

Readers may recall that Dr Wood had sold the building to a private individual without advertising on the open market. That individual wanted to lease the building as a GP surgery or other business/office premises. The building had little scope for development and under the lease couldn’t be substantially altered. There had been interest shown from a couple of GP practices, but it was unknown how they would address the refusal of the Integrated Care Board (ICB) to allow the building to be deemed fit for purpose as a surgery.

As it turns out the interested GPs did not pursue the matter and the building has now been leased as an office base for a company who run care homes. The old treatment room/nurses’ room is now a kitchen/staff room for employees of the company involved.

So, the fight to reinstate the building as a GP surgery is over, however the campaign to persuade the ICB to return a surgery to Evington Village will continue. The surgery has not always been located at 10 the Common and in fact at one point in history it was run from the detached double bay fronted white and brick house at 6 Church Road. Thus, all hope is not lost and work will go on. We await the outcome of the Ombudsman’s investigation into a complaint about the way the surgery was closed, the report on which is due any time now. If this finds any fault in the consultation and closure it may provide an opportunity to negotiate with the ICB.
