Richard Eric Jolin 1930 – 2023

21st May 1930 – 14th November 2023

Written by Eric’s daughters, Ruth and Helen

Eric Jolin was born in Leicester and spent the majority of his life in Evington and Oadby.  He had a loving family and one of his favourite activities was spending time with his father at their allotment.  As a boy, Eric enjoyed youth groups, including Scouts and The Boys’ Brigade.  Eric attended churches locally and met his beloved wife, Audrey, at Melbourne Hall.  Eric and Audrey had three children, but sadly their dear son, Simon, passed away in his forties due to ill-health.

Eric was a talented sportsman, excelling in a range of sports such as football, rugby, cricket and tennis; he played for County teams in tennis, cricket and rugby.  Eric loved cycling and was known to ride his push-bike from Leicester to Derbyshire or the Lake District, along with equally enthusiastic friends!

For most of his professional life, Eric was self-employed in publishing.  An enquiring mind inspired his love of learning, particularly languages.  Eric had broad general knowledge, with impressive recall – a formidable combination!

Eric possessed admirable qualities and was utterly dependable.  In later life, Eric faced health challenges with dignity and demonstrated stoicism in the face of adversity.  Eric and Audrey supported each other throughout life and with wider assistance from family, friends and carers were able to spend most of their time together, having been married for sixty years.

Although illness or infirmity may affect the way we live, move and communicate, our loved one’s stories can still shine through and be remembered.  It is wonderful to be able to appreciate the richness of someone’s life beyond the snapshot of time we may see in any one single moment.

Written as a tribute to a cherished husband, father, family member and friend.
