The policy is for grassland and wildflower areas with the purpose of enhancing biodiversity, carbon sequestration and sustainable management and connectivity.

It offers a blueprint for practices that tackle the dual purposes of biodiversity and climate change.

This policy does not cover amenity grass.

Mowing Regimes

Type Management
Annual flowers Usually sown on clear plant free areas and removed in Autumn and to be sown again the following Spring.
Perennial meadows Cut/Spin and Lift (or grazing) Spin to make seeds drop
Flowering Lawns  4 to 6 cuts a year.  Horizons lifted
Naturalised grass (1) 1 cut a year horizons left
Naturalised grass (2) 1 cut a year horizons lifted
Naturalised herbaceous Cut once and lift
Bulb Planting  
Natural/Rewild  
Biennial cut Cut once every two years.

Grassland areas 

Amenity Grass (Not included in LCC policy)
SINC sites  (Sites of Importance for Natural Conservation)
Roadside Verges belonging to LCC departments.  Council land can belong to different LCC departments, e.g. Housing, Highways, Parks.
Roadside Verges looked after by Leicester City Council 
Roadside Verges (small amount) looked after by volunteer groups LEV/ Bloom/IYN 
Parks.  (Includes a small amount of land looked after by LEV/Bloom/IYN)
Open Spaces (includes a small amount of land looked after by LEV/Bloom/IYN groups)
Flood plains
Private gardens
Private land belonging to businesses
