EVINGTON’S 2014 WAR MEMORIAL PROJECT

Many different groups in Evington have been involved in delivering this war memorial project ready for our commemorative events this year.

Cooperation between the community, led by Friends of Evington, local councillors and the local authority has been going well. A grant for the hard landscaping side of the project has been complemented by a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund for the social side of the project.

Anyone visiting Evington now will see that the tired looking war memorial is smart and clean with new flower beds, re laid paving, new benches and redug flower beds that are no longer in the the shade. Thank you to the Air cadets for coming on a very wet Saturday to dig. Also thank you Malcolm for leading the community side of this project.

The group held a successful Peace event on 4th August and they are to bury a time capsule for Remembrance on 11th November, starting at the War Memorial at 10.30am. A huge part of the project will be the storytelling and involvement of our local schools. There will be retelling the history of Evington during the war and the village’s involvement in the V.A. D. hospital at Evington Park House (then called Knighton V.A.D. hospital). Another large part of the project is the collection of stories from people who now live in Evington. We want to know how the war affected the lives of their relatives, the story of their relatives and what impact the war had on them personally.

Please write back if you live in Evington and have a WW1 story to tell.

Helen Pettman.
