Cllr. Zuffar Haq’s report for the Evington Echo for Oct./Nov. 2025

Cllr. Zuffar Haq’s report for the Evington Echo for Oct./Nov. 2025

These are some of the tasks I have undertaken during the last few weeks as an Evington Ward Councillor.

Supported by my team, Nitesh Dave and Farida Patel, my Saturday surgery for residents continues to take place on Saturdays at 11 o’clock at the Eden café in Evington.

Have attended council meetings at the Town Hall and City Hall and surgeries for residents, at the Evington Library.

Attended the Evington community ward meeting

I continue to carry out case work, leading from residents requests for help or support with issues or problems that concern them.

After contacting the highways department, many times, about the large potholes and the rough surface, Wicklow Drive has finally been resurfaced!

Residents have asked me to look into traffic calming measures on Wicklow Drive such as speed humps.

Contacted Highways Department and requested that resurfacing of Coleman Road is scheduled as soon as possible.

Have requested a bike stand on Main Street, Evington, following requests from residents.

Had a meeting with UHL Chief Operating Officer to discuss the situation at the A&E department at the LRI and the proposed Hospital Hopper charges for hospital staff.

Invited to participate in a BBC TV programme regarding the 111service and the need for more GP appointments, in order to improve the situation in A&E and also proposed Hospital Hopper charges for hospital staff.

I am campaigning for Electric buses in Evington and pushing for an improved bus service in the area, as residents have approached me about the poor bus service and buses being late.

I checked that the council will be removing the shoots on the tree trunks along Spencefield Lane, as it unsafe for drivers attempting to pull out of their drives and pull out at junctions due to the restricted view caused by the the overgrowth of shoots. This is scheduled to take place during the 3rd week of September.

Residents have voiced concerns that some areas in Evington, were becoming very messy and untidy. These areas have now been cleaned.

I continue to campaign on behalf of parents for more school places for children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities.

The Evington Village Fete was very busy on the hot sunny day in August. It was great to see so many people enjoying this annual event, after all the effort and organisation that takes place by the dedicated Village fete committee and volunteers

Following residents concerns about speeding traffic on Church Road, the council are considering  various traffic calming measures and it is planned to consult with residents early in the new year, to discuss the viability of these proposals.

I continue to actively support our local schools and keep them informed about potential funding and other opportunities.

It was great to be joined by a number of residents for the VJ Day celebrations. Thank you to the Council for ensuring that the Memorial area in Evington looked wonderful for the occasion

I am still collecting donations of fruit again this year for the food banks.

If anyone has any surplus apples, pears or plums in their garden please contact me.

We are still looking for more school governors. If anyone would like to take on this role please contact me.

If anyone needs any help or support please contact me.
