Bhangra comes to Evington
On 26th June Evington welcomes Bhangra, a lively and energetic dance and music style that dates back to the Sikh Punjabi community in Punjab during the 1960s.
Although bhangra music uses several elements of Punjabi folk music, it is also radically different in taking on a more modern slant. It is a prominent form of entertainment and a means of expressing joy, particularly during festive and celebratory occasions.
Bhangra started as a harvest dance performed by farmers celebrating the spring harvest festival called Vaisakhi. Over time, it evolved into a global cultural expression, driven by the dhol (a double-sided drum) with fast, rhythmic beats. It developed in the UK in Birmingham, Bradford and Leicester from the 70s onward.
Modern Bhangra often mixes traditional Punjabi rhythms and pop, hip-hop, and electronic music.
It is characterised by high-energy jumps and kicks, strong shoulder and arm movements together with big smiles and expressive gestures. Traditional outfits are bright and vibrant, with men wearing kurta, lungi, and a tall turban or pag. Women wear salwar kameez with a flowing scarf or dupatta.
Today, Bhangra is popular worldwide, especially in countries like the UK, Canada, and the US and is often seen at weddings, cultural festivals and dance competitions.
Leicester Tigers have featured Bhangra performances at matches and club events at Mattioli Woods Welford Road over the years. One notable example was in 2015, when award-winning Leicester Bhangra group Gabhru Panjab De performed during half-time at a sold-out Tigers vs Northampton Saints match. The dancers also took part in the pre-match atmosphere and guard of honour.
Bhangra dancers and drummers also appeared during Diwali-themed entertainment at Tigers fixtures, including “Friday Night Lights” events in 2021.
As part of her overhaul of the Cedars, new manager Audrey Mather is staging a Bhangra night on Friday 26th June from 17:00. So be prepared for a lively, upbeat and colourful night of entertainment.
