Beware the New EV!

EVs or electric vehicles are becoming increasingly popular across the globe as we hopefully move towards a net zero world. But for those driving within Leicester City there is one EV they might want to be careful of.

The EV in question does not stand for electric vehicle but rather an enforcement vehicle equipped with CCTV cameras. After leasing one from Nottingham City Council, Leicester City Council has invested between £75, 000-£90,000 to buy and kit out their very own Big Brother Rover.

The vehicle-mounted ANPR CCTV enforcement system has been commissioned to tackle parking and moving traffic offences. The vehicle, a Renault Clio Hatchback, was already owned by the Council and has been converted with additional hardware and software.

The Council has secured additional powers to enforce parking and moving traffic offences using an approved device (an ANPR Camera) to combat obstructive and dangerous parking on red routes, zigzag markings outside schools, bus stop clearways and on cycle lanes, which are issues regularly raised by other road users and pedestrians. One of the primary uses of a camera will be to deter and issue Penalty Charge Notices of £70 to those motorists who seriously jeopardise road safety by parking or driving in contravention of specific motoring restrictions.
