Assembly of Resistance
Can you believe that major political reform/political resistance could begin here in Evington?
Last weekend at St. Philip’s Church, in Evington that is exactly what happened when former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn led a rallying cry as a precursor to yesterday’s announcement (Thursday 4th July 2025) by Coventry South MP Zarah Sultana who quit the Labour Party, that she will “co-lead the founding of a new party, with other Independent MPs, campaigners and activists across the country.”
In tandem, a new initiative in Leicester, the ‘Assembly of Resistance’ is being set up, the organisers of which say they aim to build around the political foundations laid, creating a new political organisation that is run by and for ordinary people.
The launch of the so called ‘Assembly of Resistance’ is to take place on Saturday July 5 at Highfields Centre from 2pm to 4.30pm. It is described as a “people-powered” political organisation that aims to challenge the established parties and challenge what they call “the rigged system that enriches a tiny minority at the expense of the many.”
Local MP Shockat Adam and Trade Unionist Michael James Barker, author of ‘Thoughts of a Leicester Socialist’, are at the heart of these developments.
This is occurring in the shadow of yesterdays supposed abandonment of democracy by the Labour led City Council who refused to allow questions or debate on the funding of community centres and libraries, leading to all the opposition councillors taking the extraordinary step of walking out of the council chambers.
One wonders about the development of a ‘new’ political party, despite the clear fragmentation of the Labour Party, the collapse of the Tory vote and the rise of Nigel Farage’s Reform UK Party. Will this simply split the labour vote and allow Reform to fill the vacuum? Will it kill off the Green Party vote?
Indeed, what will be different with this new party, how can they move ahead with their intentions when democracy across the board is fractured, weak and does not serve ordinary voters? What is needed is a radical overhaul of the political system to eradicate the lies, backbiting and deceit that robs us all of true democracy.
Fortunately, there is a move to try to get lying in politics to be considered illegal-shock horror! Compassion In Politics (Compassion in Politics)is leading this drive and any political party that is genuinely intending to reform politics in the UK and support ordinary people needs to nail the aims of this organisation to their mast.
Finally, there seems to be a schism between local and national politics, Often, at local level we hear little from political parties until it is time for an election, here in Evington we are fortunate to have a strong, active and supportive Liberal Democrat Councillor, where are the other parties when we need them down here on the streets?
