ARMCHAIR FAN: Five Leicester City Matches

There should never be this much hoo-hah about it. Gary Rowett should keep Leicester up with no problem. I can understand the appointment—even though he wasn’t my first choice.

Stoke (2–2), 21 February

Leicester should have won. Stoke’s second goal looked offside, and Leicester hit both the crossbar and the post in the final minute. How did Luke Thomas miss that?

Middlesbrough (1–1), 24 February

A lovely, flighted ball from Mukassa and a headed finish from Okali gave City the lead.
But Okali’s weak clearance handed Middlesbrough an equaliser in first-half stoppage time—an absolute gift. He could have hoofed it anywhere upfield; anywhere but where he put it.

Patson Daka missed another good chance, heading a lofted ball wide. Leicester should have won both matches.

Winks back in the side

For me, leaving out Harry Winks (capped 10 times by England) never made sense. Performances have improved since he returned, and he scored with a strong strike against Stoke.

Mukassa has also made a decent start: he got off the mark quickly with two goals and an assist.

Norwich (0–2), 28 February

Daka blazed a good chance over and volleyed another wide. Later he missed the ball completely—“a striker full of confidence connects with that,” as one pundit put it.

Daka’s passing was poor, and “Nelson giving the ball away” was mentioned more than once. Norwich won 2–0.

Ipswich (1–1), 7 March

I don’t know why Leicester started Daka instead of Mukassa. Mukassa is in better form.

Still, Daka scored on 40 minutes: a left-footed volley from 12 yards out—his fourth goal of the season. Does Daka think he’s Jairzinho or something? You’d think he’d scored 20 the way he slid away celebrating, then did the little gesture to God like the Brazilians in those old World Cup films.

The second-half introductions of Mukassa and Jordan James gave Leicester more threat. Ipswich equalised in the 76th minute and it finished 1–1. Leicester still need wins.

A lot of people seem happy with a point and get too focused on what West Brom are doing. Who cares? Just win your games.

Bristol City (2–0), 10 March

Mavididi’s good curling effort after five minutes was pushed away by the Bristol keeper. Leicester started brightly, with wingers Fatawu and Mavididi both looking a threat.

Ben Nelson headed in a Jordan James free-kick on 13 minutes—his first goal of the season. Mavididi hit the post after 20 minutes, then Fatawu volleyed in his ninth of the season after 29 minutes to make it 2–0.

Stolarczyk also saved Reece’s penalty for Bristol.
