Volunteer With The Evington Echo
The Evington Echo has been part of local life in Evington for many years, sharing community news, events, local stories, public information, environmental updates, heritage, wellbeing features and the voices of residents, groups and organisations.
As the Echo prepares for its next stage, Friends of Evington is inviting local people to help continue this important community publication.
The Echo has benefited from the careful stewardship of Helen Pettman, whose long-standing editorial work has helped sustain a trusted, locally rooted publication for residents. The next stage is not about replacing that work with one person doing everything. It is about building a wider team of volunteers who can help carry the Echo forward in a practical, supported and sustainable way.
Volunteers may be able to help with writing short articles, gathering local stories, speaking with community groups, taking photographs, checking event details, helping with distribution, supporting the website, assisting with advertising, proofreading, recording memories, contributing local history, or helping residents and organisations share useful information.
Publishing or reporting experience is not essential. However, transferable skills will be valuable. These may include clear writing, listening, organisation, attention to detail, confidence speaking with people, photography, administration, basic digital skills, local knowledge, proofreading, design, social media, sales, community work, teaching, research, or experience supporting groups and events.
What matters most is an interest in Evington, a willingness to work constructively with others, and a commitment to helping residents stay informed and connected. Volunteers will not be expected to do everything. Some people may contribute occasionally, while others may wish to take on a regular role.
The Echo is a community publication with clear standards. Volunteers will be supported to understand how to contribute fairly, accurately and responsibly. This includes checking information, treating people with respect, being careful with sensitive issues, and helping maintain the trust that readers have placed in the Echo over many years.
Getting involved can be a simple, flexible way to support local life. The Evington Echo belongs to the wider life of the area. Its future depends on residents, contributors, volunteers and trustees working together to keep local communication open, inclusive and useful.
