OADBY REMEMBERS
On the 4th and 5th July St Peter’s Parish Church, Oadby will be hosting a weekend of First World War commemorations events organised by the Oadby Remembers 1914-1918 community project.
A brand new exhibition entitled “From Oadby to The Front” will be launched in the church on Saturday morning. The fifth exhibition from the research team, it will look at the men of Oadby who answered their country’s call to arms in 1914 and follow their journey from the recruitment office through basic training and into the front line trenches. Beautifully illustrated with carefully selected photos, newspaper articles, letters and personal recollections, the exhibition will bring to life the reality of war for the Oadby officers and men one hundred years ago. “From Oadby to the Front” can be viewed in St Peter’s Church from Saturday 4 July to Saturday 25 July. The church is open from 9am to 5.30pm on weekdays and 7.30am to 7.30pm on Sundays.
To accompany the launch of the new exhibition Nigel Atter, military historian with the Oadby Remembers 1914-1918 project and a member of the Western Front Association will be presenting an illustrated talk at 7pm on Saturday 4 July.
Nigel says “The talk is entitled “From Flanders to Gallipoli – The Experience of Five Oadby Soldiers” and it will tell the stories of three courageous young officers of the 1/4th Leicestershire Regiment who, fresh from the public schools’ Officer Training Corps commanded men twice their age in the trenches of the Western Front. We will also be looking at two Oadby men who emigrated to Canada and Australia only to return and fight alongside Imperial Forces at Ypres and Gallipoli.”
St Peter’s Parish Church will also be the venue for a Community Commemoration Service to honour the memory of the five Oadby men who gave their lives for freedom between April and July 1915. The service will start at 6.30pm and is open to people of all faiths or none.
