1930 – 2024
Douglas Smith, Architect and Artist, lived in Evington with his wife Shirley, in a bungalow he built himself off Spencefield Lane.
Douglas studied art and architecture at Cheltenham College and Leicester School of Architecture (now De Montfort University). He set up a successful, multidisciplinary practice in Leicester called Douglas Smith Stimpson Partnership, which has made significant contributions to Leicester City’s architecture.
In 1988, when Bryan Organ came to the end of his term of office as President of the Leicester Society of Artists, Douglas was invited to be President and held that position for 27 years. Douglas had an insatiable love for travel and art. Throughout his long and distinquished career as an architect, Douglas has enthusiastically followed his passion for painting and sketching.

And also his book of painting and sketches called ‘Leicester’. Reprinted here is a picture of the front cover of the December 2009 Evington Echo, which shows some of his sketches of Leicester buildings.
At the end of his life, Douglas was cared for by his son, Adrian and Adrian’s family.
