Leicester (i/ˈlɛstər/ les-tər) is a city and unitary authority area in the East Midlands of England, and the county town of Leicestershire. The city lies on the River Soar and at the edge of the National Forest.

In the 2011 census, the population of the Leicester unitary authority was 330,000, making it the largest unitary authority in the East Midlands region, whilst 509,000 people lived in the wider Leicester Urban Area, making Leicester the tenth largest city in the United Kingdom and England’s eleventh largest urban area.

Leicester has a fascinating history. It was an important Roman city and many Roman remains can be seen. It became a major economic centre in the 19th Century, with a variety of manufacturers engaged in engineering, shoemaking and hosiery production. Leicester welcomed the Ugandan Asians to the city in the 1970s. The story of the discovery of the remains of Richard III in a Leicester car park is of world wide interest.
